A Snake and a Dove for God?

“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. (Matthew 10:16 NIV)

I always wondered about the above verse.

What exactly does it mean to be to be as shrewd as snakes and innocent as doves in the Christian life?

I understand the sheep among wolves analogy, but a snake? I always associated them with bad, evil, the devil. As far as doves, I had never really given them much thought.

In the above verse, Jesus is preparing his disciples to be sent out to share the good news.

He knows some people will receive it and some won’t. Persecution is inevitable. They will face opposition, but without Jesus physical presence.

Upon further study, here are the reasons we are to be like the snake and dove in a contentious world.

Snakes

Snakes do not randomly attack. They bite in self-defense or for food. Otherwise they keep to themselves.

Matthew Henry tells us, “The disciples of Christ are hated and persecuted as serpents, and their ruin is sought, and, therefore, they need the serpent's wisdom”.

He goes on to say being wise as snakes includes not bringing troubles on our own heads, knowing when to speak and when to keep silent, and avoiding being offensive whenever possible.

Thankfully, our generous God grants us wisdom whenever we ask and in whatever situation (James 1:5)!

Doves

Doves are signs of peace. Gentle and mild with no ill will.

The Holy Spirit appeared as a dove when our Lord Jesus came up out of the water after being baptized.

Doves neither seek to hurt or get in harm’s way.

We are to be innocent as doves in a world full of enemies.

Then, Peter reminds us, though they may wrongly accuse us, they will see our good deeds and glorify God (1 Peter 2:12).

It is so amazing He invites us to share the Greatest Story Ever Told – His story!

Maybe snakes aren’t so bad after all.

Heavenly Father, thank you for allowing me the privilege to share Your amazing Good News- the Gospel - with others. Thank you for giving wisdom generously when I ask for help. Help me to be as shrewd as a snake and as innocent as a dove remembering someone’s eternal life is at hand. In Jesus Name, Amen.
